Microzooplankton community composition along the Western Antarctic Peninsula

چکیده
Microzooplankton are an integral part of aquatic food webs, yet compared to macrozooplankton, are understudied in the Southern Ocean. The region along the Western Antarctic Peninsula (WAP) is experiencing rapid climate warming, resulting in declines in sea ice extent and duration, and affecting the marine food web. Microzooplankton community structure along the WAP was analyzed in January 2010 and 2011 as part of the Palmer Antarctica Long-Term Ecological Research project. Whole seawater samples were collected within the top 100 m of the water column along both north-south and coastaloffshore gradients, and major taxa of microzooplankton were quantified using microscopy. Average chlorophyll-a concentrations and microzooplankton biomass were higher in 2011 compared to 2010. Athecate dinoflagellates and aloricate ciliates dominated microzooplankton biomass, and the biomass of most taxonomic groups was higher in the south compared to the north. Specifically, aloricate ciliate and tintinnid biomass increased with increasing latitude, and biomass peaked at several southern, inshore stations – including Marguerite Bay, which was an area of high biomass for some microzooplankton taxa. Biomass was higher in surface waters compared to 100 m, and variability in microzooplankton biomass between years and with distance from shore was most likely due to sea ice dynamics. Microzooplankton biomass was positively correlated with chlorophyll-a and particulate organic carbon. These results are used to consider how microzooplankton populations may be adjusting to environmental changes along

Carbon fluxes and pelagic ecosystem dynamics near two western Antarctic Peninsula Adélie penguin colonies: an inverse model approach
An inverse food-web model for the western Antarctic Peninsula (WAP) pelagic food web was constrained with data from Palmer Long Term Ecological Research (PAL-LTER) project annual austral summer sampling cruises. Model solutions were generated for 2 regions with Adélie penguin Pygoscelis adeliae colonies presenting different population trends (a northern and a southern colony) for a 12 yr period...
متن کاملSeasonal Succession of Free-Living Bacterial Communities in Coastal Waters of the Western Antarctic Peninsula
The marine ecosystem along the Western Antarctic Peninsula undergoes a dramatic seasonal transition every spring, from almost total darkness to almost continuous sunlight, resulting in a cascade of environmental changes, including phytoplankton blooms that support a highly productive food web. Despite having important implications for the movement of energy and materials through this ecosystem,...
متن کاملDiet of a specialist in a changing environment: the crabeater seal along the western Antarctic Peninsula
Although crabeater seals Lobodon carcinophaga are among the most abundant consumers of Antarctic krill Euphausia superba, their diet has rarely been studied throughout most of the species’ range. Using δ13C and δ15N values in vibrissae from 53 seals, we examined the trophic ecology of crabeater seals from the western Antarctic Peninsula (wAP) in 2001, 2002 and 2007. We observed a wide variabili...
متن کاملAlteration of the food web along the Antarctic Peninsula in response to a regional warming trend
In the nearshore coastal waters along the Antarctic Peninsula, a recurrent shift in phytoplankton community structure, from diatoms to cryptophytes, has been documen ted. The shift was observed in consecutive years (1991–1996) during the austral summer and was correlated in time and space with glacial melt-water runoff and reduced surface water salinities. Elevated temperatures along the Penin...
متن کاملMicrobial diversity and community structure across environmental gradients in Bransfield Strait, Western Antarctic Peninsula
The Southern Ocean is currently subject to intense investigations, mainly related to its importance for global biogeochemical cycles and its alarming rate of warming in response to climate change. Microbes play an essential role in the functioning of this ecosystem and are the main drivers of the biogeochemical cycling of elements. Yet, the diversity and abundance of microorganisms in this syst...
